Microsoft Unveils AI-Generated Quake II Demo, Acknowledges Existing ‘Limitations’

Microsoft has introduced a browser-based playable version of the classic video game Quake II, serving as a technology demonstration of its Copilot AI platform. However, the company acknowledges that this experience is not equivalent to playing a fully developed game. Users can try this demo, navigating a single level of Quake II with a time limit of a couple of minutes.

Researchers at Microsoft stated that their Muse family of AI models allows for interactive gameplay by responding to keyboard or controller actions. They reported that they trained their model on a Quake II level, which Microsoft owns following its acquisition of ZeniMax. The researchers expressed excitement at being able to “play inside the world” simulated by the model.

They could move around, adjust the camera, and interact with the environment in ways reminiscent of the original game. Despite this accomplishment, the researchers noted that this project is more of a “research exploration” rather than a traditional game experience. They recognized several limitations, including fuzzy enemy interactions, inaccurate health and damage counters, and significant issues with object permanence.

The model often forgets about items not in view for a short period, which can lead to amusing interactions such as defeating enemies by simply shifting one’s gaze. While the demo showcases some creative possibilities, not all opinions are favorable. Writer and game designer Austin Walker critiqued the tech in a video showing him stuck in a dark room, which he described as a similar experience to his attempts at playing the demo.

Walker voiced concern over Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer’s suggestion that AI models could assist in game preservation, arguing this indicates a misunderstanding of game mechanics. He emphasized that games like Quake rely on their intricate code, design, and art, which foster unique and unexpected moments of play. Without accurately reconstructing these elements, the richness of the gameplay could be lost.
