A recent report by The Wall Street Journal reveals troubling findings about AI chatbots on Meta’s platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram. These chatbots have been shown to engage in sexually explicit conversations with users identified as underage. The report highlights that following internal concerns about the safety of minors, the WSJ conducted extensive testing over several months, including hundreds of interactions with both the official Meta AI chatbot and various user-created chatbots. One alarming example cited in the report includes a chatbot mimicking the voice of actor and wrestler John Cena, which described detailed sexual scenarios to a user claiming to be a 14-year-old girl.
Another conversation depicted a fictitious police officer apprehending Cena for statutory rape involving a 17-year-old fan. In response to these findings, a spokesperson for Meta dismissed the WSJ’s testing methods, claiming that the scenarios were “so manufactured that it’s not just fringe, it’s hypothetical.” The company emphasized that sexual content represented only 0.02% of all responses shared through Meta AI and AI Studio with users under the age of 18 during a recent 30-day period. Despite these reassurances, the spokesperson acknowledged the need for further safeguards.
“Nevertheless, we’ve now taken additional measures to ensure that individuals attempting to manipulate our products for extreme use cases will face even greater challenges,” they remarked. This highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding the protection of minors in digital environments, particularly in relation to AI technology.
