Waymo is set to utilize data from its robotaxi services, including footage from interior cameras linked to riders’ identities, to train generative AI models, according to a draft of its privacy policy uncovered by researcher Jane Manchun Wong. The draft suggests that Waymo might also share this information for ad personalization, prompting concerns about how riders’ behavior in autonomous vehicles could be leveraged for both AI training and marketing purposes. The privacy policy states, “Waymo may share data to improve and analyze its functionality and to tailor products, services, ads, and offers to your interests.” Riders have the choice to opt out of sharing their information with third parties unless it is necessary for the service to function.
While this type of language is commonplace, the inclusion of internal camera footage raises alarms regarding privacy. Waymo does allow riders to prevent the sharing or sale of personal information, as defined by California’s privacy laws. Furthermore, riders can opt out of Waymo using their personal information, including data linked to interior cameras, for AI model training.
However, it’s uncertain which types of interior data will be utilized for these generative AI models or what the intended applications may be. Questions remain about the specific data captured by the interior cameras, such as facial expressions and body language, and whether this data will be used for internal AI models or shared with other Alphabet companies. Waymo stands as the only autonomous vehicle company in the U.S. currently generating revenue through robotaxi rides.
The company reported over 200,000 paid rides per week in early 2024, a significant increase from just two years prior. While Waymo’s growth appears promising, it likely continues to operate at a loss for Alphabet, which has contributed substantial funding to support its expansion and ongoing research and development. As Waymo seeks new revenue sources, including in-vehicle advertising and data sharing, it is unclear how soon it will achieve profitability.
