Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reorganizing the company’s artificial intelligence initiatives to focus on developing AI “superintelligence.” This initiative will consolidate all AI teams under a newly established division called Meta Superintelligence Labs. Alexandr Wang, who previously served as CEO of data labeling company Scale AI, will head this new group as chief AI officer.
He is set to collaborate closely with Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub, who will manage Meta’s AI products and applied research. This strategic leadership move is aimed at strengthening Meta’s position in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. Zuckerberg is actively pursuing advancements in artificial general intelligence (AGI) and has taken significant steps to enhance Meta’s capabilities.
The company made a notable investment of $14.3 billion in Scale AI earlier this month, which facilitated Wang’s appointment. This investment is part of a broader effort to propel Meta to the forefront of AI technology. Furthermore, Meta has successfully recruited 11 new AI researchers from rival companies, bolstering its talent pool.
Among the hires are notable figures such as Pei Sun, a principal researcher from Google DeepMind, and Joel Pobar, an engineer from Anthropic. These additions reflect Zuckerberg’s commitment to securing top-tier talent to drive the company’s AI ambitions. With these changes, Meta aims to accelerate its progress in AI development and establish itself as a leader in the field.
